The bright billed toucan carries a primary welcome on the gate. The colours on fences, gates, walls and buildings brighten the drought dusted city. The colours applied by painters in twisting and head turning ways present at every corner refracted in the clouded sky. The horse and rider emerge from the rainbow umbrellas riding above the street turning heads to follow the cobblestoned street. The toucan underscores a precision. The turned head potentiates the next images. The dancing of colour and image twirls in a dervish way across the horizon of buildings and dust.
On another corner the affection for a Mexican icon spreads around the corner. The hearts cascade like seasonal lights and form a building wrap that could spark Tyvek to update its water screen option. Again the spectrum (ROY G BIV) of colours organized like bands on a resistor or crayons in a box, foreshadows the rainbow of love for every person.
The painterly solid blue sky is interrupted by the palm fronds waving in the sea breeze. From my vista on the strand — all is well. The artist of infinite perspective, of surprise at every corner, of rest and recreation, of serenity — waves through an unclouded sky with a Palm Sunday welcome. No matter, “I thank whatever gods may be / For my unconquerable soul” It may serve us well to pause with Henley and recognize our god-given souls and take responsibility for our spiritual actions in community. Painting buildings and walls can be seen as radical statements. Using crayons might be good for the soul.
