Free Car Wash and a Shoe Shine

We were driving around Kingston looking for a place to spray the blood of a thousand northern Ontario bugs off the Westphalia and the navigation software pointed us to an operator on Rigney Street.  Now going to a high end detailing shop to squash some bugs off the windshield was already presumptive, then asking for an impromptu appointment was even more audacious.  However this was an urgent ego or shame question as the Westy was looking like a battered bug screen.  I spoke kindly (used manipulation and charm) and asked the woman washing a sparkling clean vehicle if they would have time to debug my car.  Now I did explain that your average car wash would not accept the vehicle and that the VW was a worthy specimen for an 89 that deserved special affection. She looked up, put down her hose, looked at the van, looked at the plates, “you’ve come a long way..”  I told her we came just to see her and get the vehicle cleaned.  She asked for a moment and walked over to her boss and promptly walked back and said they could do it right away.  Now that was like some higher power good fortune.  She backed a car out of the way, pulled the assistant off another vehicle and motioned me to drive right into her washing bay.  Sponges, brushes, clothes and hard work dug into the layers of splattered bodies.  Her assistant, amazed by the aftermarket wheels, brushed them till they looked new and then some more.  In twenty minutes the Westphalia was transformed from a carrier for road kill to a concourse ready exemplar of automotive craft. I walked over to thank them and pulled out my wallet to make payment.  Now I never asked about price so I was ready for some faint inducing fee.  She looked at her boss and he just said this one is on us!  She said, we like doing this for the fun of it for people!  I tipped them by handing the money to the assistant. They stood in the doorway smiling as we drove away.  With pride and new found humility our Van is the cleanest rig in the campsite.  Our children understand squatters rights and expect the Van in mint condition when we return. Now I hope I can find someone to clean fifteen days of roadside dust from my sandals.  Somehow they are not as enamoured with my shoes!
